The ‘official’ version of the Hebrew Bible, often referred to by the symbol MT. It was settled by rabbis from the end of the 1st cent. ce and notes were appended to ensure accuracy of transmission and pronunciation of the text, which was written only with consonants. In order to avoid confusion of meaning, vowels were added to the text and these became standard in Western Judaism by the end of the 10th cent. ce and later throughout Jewish communities.
