biographer, critic, journalist, was successively professor of English literature at University College London (1853) and Edinburgh University (1865). He is remembered for his standard Life of Milton (7 vols, 1859–94), now superseded. He became the founder and editor of Macmillan's Magazine (1859). His other works include biographies of Drummond of Hawthornden (1873) and De Quincey (1881), and editions of Milton, Goldsmith, and De Quincey.
