The process of chewing food. It occurs in three phases: incision of the food, chewing of the bolus, and finally the act of swallowing. It involves the opening, closing, left lateral, right lateral, and antero-posterior movement of the mandible controlled by the muscles of mastication. The amplitude of the jaw movement increases with an increase in the size or hardness of the food being chewed and decreases as the masticatory sequence progresses.
