Quick Reference

(active late 12th century).

Spanish Romanesque architect and possibly sculptor. An inscription dated 1188 on the Portico de la Gloria at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela names Mateo as the director of works. It has usually been assumed that he was the sculptor as well as the architect of the portico (which features the greatest ensemble of Spanish sculpture of this period), but this is by no means certain.
