Is payment to a woman employee immediately prior to and following childbirth. The purpose of maternity pay is to provide income security to mothers during a period of maternity leave, when their normal work pattern, and hence their capacity to earn, is disrupted. The payment is also intended to reduce the risk of health problems which might arise from women continuing to work up to childbirth or returning to work too early after giving birth. In Britain, many women qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay, though companies often supplement the statutory entitlement through occupational maternity pay.
