(1772–1841), a leading figure in the evangelical movement in the Church of Ireland. Though for a time prevented by episcopal inhibition from preaching elsewhere in the diocese, he drew great congregations to the Bethesda chapel in Dublin. At Bethesda he and others founded the interdenominational Hibernian Bible Society (1806), on whose behalf he travelled widely throughout the country, and he was a founder member of the Hibernian Church Missionary Society (1814) for evangelism overseas.
