(b Stirling, 1911; d Oxford, 1975). Scottish conductor and composer. Occasional opera cond. at SW but prominent as cond. of film mus. Worked for Sir Alexander Korda, film producer, 1931–9. Mus. dir. Govt. film units 1940–5, then for J. Arthur Rank films. Responsible for persuading Bliss, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Britten, Benjamin, and Bennett to compose for films. OBE 1957.
