(Hindemith: Mathis der Maler). Bar. Based on the painter Mathias Grünewald (c. 1470–1528), whose masterpiece is the Isenheim altarpiece. In a monastery, Mathis is painting a fresco. He asks himself whether he can truly serve God best through his art. He joins the peasants in their revolt, having helped their leader to escape the Confederate Army. The Cardinal allows him to go free. He soon becomes disillusioned with the cause he has joined and the methods used by the peasants to achieve their goal. In a vision, St Paul, whose features resemble the Cardinal, suggests to him that he would serve God better through his art. Created (1938) by Asger Stig. See also article by Peter Sellars.
