A common personal name in the Maccabean period; the best‐known was the priest who initiated the rebellion against the Seleucid rulers in Modein in 167 bce and whose five sons continued the struggle (1 Macc. 2: 1) against Hellenization. Two of Jesus' ancestors bore the name (Luke 3: 25).
