A type of painting which emphasizes paint as a physical substance. It became identifiable as a tendency in Paris in the 1940s in the work of Fautrier and Dubuffet, and became widespread in the 1950s. An entire school of such painting (the dominant figure being Tàpies) emerged in Spain. Other exponents included Bram Bogart, René Guiette (1893–1976) and Marc Mendelson (1915– ) in Belgium, and Jaap Wagemaker (1906–72) in the Netherlands.
