One of the twelve South Indian poet-saints, the Āḻvārs. A brahmin, he was a contemporary of Nammāḻvār, and, according to legend, after being led to him by a bright star, he became the younger man's disciple, and thereafter the popularizer of his works. A number of his own hymns, including those in praise of Nammāḻvār, have been anthologized.
