Quick Reference

(1884–1958)

Professor of theoretical geology at Kyoto Imperial University, Matuyama worked on gravity surveys, and magnetism in basalts. In 1929 he showed that the polarity of remanent magnetism in some recent basalts depended on the age of the rock, concluding that the Earth's magnetic field must undergo periodic reversals.
