Turkish Sufi order known popularly as “whirling dervishes” after a special dance used as a meditation ritual. Created by descendants of Jalal al-Din Rumi (d. 1273). Most distinctive features are initiation through lengthy orientation, khalwah (seclusion), and the importance given to sama (collective prayer chanting) as a form of meditation.
