Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. Celebrated on the twelfth day of Rabi al-Awwal. Popular celebration that includes readings from the Quran, poetry recitation, singing of songs commemorating Muhammad's virtues, and preparation of food dedicated to Muhammad and distributed to the poor. Also the occasion for state ceremonies except in Saudi Arabia. Some conservatives condemn the celebration since it was not celebrated during Muhammad's lifetime and is centered on a human being rather than God.
