Quick Reference

A Meso-American people, the Maya built (c. C2 bc–c. ad 900) very steep battered platforms on which monumental structures were created. The remains of many such temples have corbelled vaults inside (c. C4), but most openings have lintels or triangular heads. Mayan and Aztec architecture influenced European Art Deco in the 1920s and 1930s.
