A rotating disc on to which radially slit and overlapping discs of paper, cardboard, or plastic can be mounted to divide the surface into sectors of different colours for investigating colour mixing. US Maxwell disk. Also called a colour wheel. See also associationism, Talbot's law. [Named after the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell (1831–79) who invented it and published it in 1855]
