(c.1621–57), grandfather of Experience Mayhew, was owner and governor of Martha's Vineyard, where in 1643 he undertook missionary work among the Indians. This was three years prior to John Eliot's similar work on the mainland. With Eliot he wrote a number of Indian tracts, including The Glorious Progress of the Gospel (1649) and Tears of Repentance (1652).
