Ger.‐born composer. First opera Saffo (1794) was successful and was followed by 67 others until 1824, his popularity in Italy being immense until eclipsed by Rossini's. Choirmaster, S. Maria Maggiore, Bergamo, 1802; prof. of counterpoint at inst. 1805–26. Taught Donizetti. Also comp. instr. works, e.g. 2 pf. concs., and songs.
