Austrian bass‐baritone. Début Bayreuth 1902 (Hagen). Vienna Opera 1902–35, début under Mahler (Don Gomez in Ernani). Most famous role was Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier, written with him in mind though he did not create it. Salzburg Fest. début 1921; CG début 1924; NY Met 1927. Created role of Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Vienna 1919. Also concert career, singing in f.p. of Mahler's 8th Sym. (Munich 1910, cond. Mahler).
