One of the largest madrasas of Deobandi orientation in India. Founded in 1866 in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the institution was patterned largely on the madrasa at Deoband and run by people associated with the early history of the latter. Scholars associated with the Mazahir al-Ulum have been especially prominent in the study of hadith and have maintained close ties with the Tablighi Jamaat, a worldwide proselytizing movement that originated in India in the early twentieth century.
