Italian nationalist leader. While in exile in Marseilles he founded the patriotic movement Young Italy (1831) and thereafter worked for the independence and unification of Italy, becoming one of the Risorgimento's most committed leaders and planning attempted insurrections in a number of Italian cities during the 1850s. He continued to campaign for a republican Italy following the country's unification as a monarchy in 1861.
