He trained at Australian Ballet School, graduating into the company in 1983 where he was promoted to principal in 1989. He performed both the classical and contemporary repertories, additionally guesting with the Bolshoi, Kirov, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and National Ballet of Canada. Later he became guest teacher for various institutions including the Australian Ballet School and the Royal Academy of Dance. In 2001 he was appointed artistic director of the Australian Ballet since when he has commissioned major additions to the repertory including Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake (2002) and ballets by McGregor, Ratmansky, and others. He has additionally maintained the development of Australian choreographers including Stephen Baynes, Natalie Weir, and Adrian Burnett, who was appointed resident choreographer of AB in 2003.
