(1898–1967), British Army officer who was Alexander's chief of staff during the Western Desert campaigns when Alexander was appointed C-in-C Middle East in August 1942. Alexander thought him that rare creature, a brilliant staff officer and an inspiring commander. He commanded the Eighth Army's 10th Corps at Salerno and Monte Cassino during the Italian campaign. In November 1944 he became the last commander of the Eighth Army when Leese went to the Far East. He was knighted in 1943.
