US astronaut. He was pilot of the Atlantis space shuttle mission in October 1989 that deployed the Galileo spacecraft. McCulley was selected as an astronaut in 1984, retiring from NASA in 1990 to join the Lockheed Space Operations Company as deputy director of the Kennedy Space Center launch site. He then became vice-president of the United Space Alliance.
