Quick Reference

An average body temperature, which takes into account temperature variations throughout the body. It is not a mathematical mean, but is a weighted average often estimated using the equation: mean body temperature = (0.4 × Tskin) + (0.6 × Tr); Tr is rectal temperature and Tskin is the skin temperature estimated as a weighted average of the temperatures recorded from different parts of the body. For example, the skin temperature can be estimated from recordings from temperature sensors on the arm (Ta), trunk (Tt), leg (Tl), and head (Th) using the following equation: Tskin = (0.1 Ta) + (0.6 Tt) + (0.2 Tl ) ± (0.1 Th).
