A member of an ancient Indo-European people whose homeland, Media, lay south-west of the Caspian Sea. In the 7th–6th centuries bc they were masters of an empire that included most of modern Iran and extended to Cappadocia and Syria; it passed into Persian control after the defeat of King Astyages by Cyrus in 549 bc.
