Syn: medically underserved community. A region or community identified by health agencies, medical associations, or politicians, as lacking an adequate supply of physicians, nurses, hospital beds, or health care infrastructure, to meet health care needs. In some jurisdictions, this designation qualifies such a region or community to receive capital funding for buildings, equipment, and financial incentives to encourage an influx of physicians, nurses, etc.
