medium-chain triacylgycerol

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A class of fatty acids that have a shorter hydrocarbon backbone than the long-chain fatty acids present in most other fats and oils. Their smaller size enables MCTs to be absorbed rapidly and used quickly as an energy source during exercise. Ingestion of MCTs increases the level of free fatty acids in the plasma; some sport physiologists speculate that this might spare liver and muscle glycogen during high intensity aerobic exercise.
