Australian dancer and ballet director. He studied at the Australian Ballet School and joined the Australian Ballet in 1970, where he was promoted to soloist in 1972 and principal in 1974. He created roles in Tetley's Gemini (1973), Helpmann's Perisynthion (1974), Butler's Night Encounter (1975), and Hynd's Merry Widow (1975) in which he later partnered Fonteyn. A gifted dance actor who was also a fine partner, Meehan moved to American Ballet Theatre in 1977, leaving in 1980 to work on the commercial stage and then returning in 1985. He was a guest artist with the National Ballet of Canada and New York City Ballet. Between 1989 and 1993 he was artistic director of Royal Winnipeg Ballet, after which he returned to New York to teach and in 1997 to become director of American Ballet Theatre's junior company. In 2006 he was appointed director of the Hong Kong Ballet.
