membrane protein

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Any protein that is attached to a membrane, either as a peripheral membrane protein, where attachment may be e.g. through a GPI-anchor, or through a protein–protein interaction with an integral membrane protein. Integral membrane proteins have some (hydrophobic) portion of the peptide chain embedded in the phospholipid bilayer and some, but not all, may be transmembrane proteins with extracellular and cytoplasmic domains in the hydrophilic external and internal regions. Transport proteins are integral membrane proteins.
