A novus homo, served as quaestor to Tiberius and was promoted by him. He was suffect consul in ad 31 and handled the overthrow of Sejanus for Tiberius in the senate. He governed Moesia, Macedonia, and Achaia 35–44, but was forced to come to Rome in 38, to give his wife Lollia Paulina in marriage to Gaius (1), pretending to be her father. He was proconsul of Asia (probably) 48–49 and remained influential under Claudius and Nero until his death (61). Tacitus praises him.
