Inflammation of the meninges of the brain and spinal cord. The most serious form is due to infection by the meningococcus Neisseria meningitidis, and can be rapidly fatal if untreated. Less serious forms can be caused by viral infections, by lymphocytic infiltration, and by other bacteria.
