The Laconian shrine of Menelaus and Helen at Therapne; from c.700 bc occupied a commanding position on a spur high above the Eurotas, 2.5 km. (1½ mi.) SE of Sparta. A high rectangular terrace reached by a ramp, and retained by massive rectangular conglomerate ashlars, surrounded a small temple built on a conspicuous knoll.
