An amide local anaesthetic agent having a similar action to lignocaine but producing less vasodilatation. The formulation usually contains a vasoconstrictor to prolong analgesia, although the vasoconstrictor may be omitted when it is essential to retain a good blood supply to the operative site, such as when patients who have had radiotherapy to the head and neck and require tooth extraction. Known side-effects are dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Trade names: Isocaine, Polocaine.
