Armenian missionary and inventor of the Armenian script. He rose to high civil office but adopted an ascetic way of life and gathered disciples for missionary work in N. and E. Armenia. About 401 he fashioned an alphabet for Armenian and, with the Catholicos Isaac, directed a programme for translating into Armenian biblical, liturgical, and theological texts from Syriac and Greek. Feast days, 19 Feb. and 25 Nov.
