First Algerian nationalist leader to call for Algeria's independence from France. Joined the French army, moved to France (1923), and married a French woman. Returned to Algeria and founded the Party of the Algerian People (PPA) in 1937. After independence, he wrote his memoirs in France. Buried in Tlemcen.
