(1893–1973), British Army officer whose sanguine but dashing temperament made him one of the most successful British commanders. He led a brigade during the East African campaign; 4th Indian Division, and then 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats), during the Western Desert campaigns; 7th Indian Division in the Burma campaign, which successfully fought the Japanese during the Admin Box battle and their Imphal offensive; and, from December 1944 to July 1945, 4th Corps which defeated the Japanese at Meiktila, and then entered Rangoon. His last wartime post was as C-in-C Malaya. He was knighted in 1945.
