A genus of trees or shrubs in which the fruit is either dehiscent or not, and is seated on, or enveloped by, the enlarged woody sepals. The timber (notably ironwood from M. ferrea) is hard, heavy, and durable. There are about 40 species, occurring in Indo-Malaysia.
