A general term for diseases in which normal metabolic processes are upset or disrupted in some way. The causes include inborn (genetic) errors of metabolism leading to absence or malfunction of an essential metabolic process, hormonal dysfunction, and mineral or vitamin deficiency states. Examples include phenylketonuria, diabetes, and thyroid dysfunction.
