The most diverse clan of peptidases (metalloproteases, metalloproteinases, MMPs), with more than 30 families identified. One or more divalent cations, held in place by the charged side groups of several amino acids, often histidine and glutamate, activate a water molecule and facilitate hydrolysis. The commonest ion is zinc.
