Italy's most famous naive painter, born at Terni in Umbria, where he was a master-shoemaker (he designed as well as made shoes and won several awards at national and international competitions). Metelli took up painting when he was 50 and often worked far into the night after a day at the shoemaker's craft (he sometimes painted a small boot or pair of boots after his signature on his canvases). His main subjects were portraits and scenes in his home town; occasionally he did copies of Old Masters.
