Quick Reference

An artificial satellite specifically designed and operated to obtain meteorological observations in real time for forecasting purposes. It is thus distinguished from earth-resource and other satellites that may carry instrumentation to monitor specific phenomena for climatological or other purposes.

Two types are in use: geostationary satellites such as GOES, GMS, and Meteosat; and polar-orbiting satellites, such as the NOAA and METEOR series.

Subjects: Meteorology and Climatology — Astronomy and Astrophysics.
