A colorless sweet-smelling gas at room temperature, an intermediate product in some chemical processes, used as a propellant in production of foam plastics and formerly as a refrigerant. It is a central nervous system depressant and causes mental confusion, convulsions, and ataxia; prolonged exposure to low concentrations can cause these effects to become permanent.
