Quick Reference

A period of 19 years after which the Moon's phases repeat on approximately the same calendar dates. The cycle was discovered by the ancient Greek astronomer Meton in the 5th century bc and is used in constructing lunisolar calendars. It occurs because there are almost exactly 235 synodic months (lunations) in 19 tropical years.
