A highly toxic ingredient of waste products of mercury compounds used in industry. Mercury discharged in industrial effluent contaminates aquifers, water courses, etc. and is biotransformed by bacteria in marine and some freshwater food chains to methyl mercury. This has a long half-life. It was the agent responsible for Minamata disease.
