A proposed NASA mission to image black holes using the technique of X-ray interferometry. MAXIM will consist of up to 32 separate X-ray reflecting mirrors arranged in a circle hundreds of metres wide, feeding a detector some 500 km behind them. MAXIM would have a resolution of 0.1 microarcseconds, sufficient to resolve the event horizon around black holes. To test the techniques involved, a precursor mission called MAXIM Pathfinder is planned.
