Small glial cells of the monocyte lineage that are found throughout grey and white matter of the brain. They constitute ~20% of the glial cell population and provide a primary immune response system behind the blood–brain barrier. Microglia invade neural tissue in early development and can differentiate into macrophages, present antigen, secrete cytokines, and act as scavengers.
