The flying of microlight or ultralight aviation machines that can look like tiny conventional aicraft, or like a go-kart with wings, or might be the powered paraglider or hang glider. As a recreational sport and competitive activity it became established in the 1980s and 1990s as an affordable form of flying in affluent countries, and is best understood as a form of lifestyle sport, combining thrill with display. In the USA the sport is called ‘light-sport aircraft’ flying. There is little international consistency of regulations or rules, as national regulations regarding safety and technical criteria vary widely. See also airsports.
