The smaller reproductive nucleus as distinguished from the larger, vegetative macronucleus (q.v.) in the cells of ciliates. Micronuclei are diploid and are transcriptionally inactive. They participate in meiosis and autogamy. See nuclear dimorphism, Tetrahymena.
