A mid‐latitude climate zone that is found in continental interiors, further from the coast than the humid continental and humid subtropical climates, and often cut off from maritime air masses by mountain ranges. The climate is drier (particularly in winter) than in the tropics, and temperatures vary more throughout the year (temperatures below freezing are not uncommon in winter).
